Jennifer N. Bacon earned her Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Maryland, College Park and a Master’s degree in Special Education from the University of Virginia. Jennifer has taught preschool age children through graduate school domestically and abroad. She is a former assistant professor of special education, special education inclusion and self-contained teacher, and special education department chairperson. In addition to her experience in education, she is trained in the use of poetry therapy, spiritual guidance, and yoga.

Her areas of expertise include exceptional learners, culturally responsive pedagogy, holistic education, expressive/creative arts, and therapies, and literacy in global education. Jennifer is also strongly connected to African American women’s writing for empowerment and social change and women’s spirituality. Deeply committed to addressing issues of overrepresentation in special education, gender equity, and writing for social justice, Jennifer participates in a number of professional associations and mentoring organizations.

Jennifer authored the book Sisters in the Dissertation House: A Dissertation Narrative, which addresses doctoral completion by women of color in underrepresented fields. Her publications also include such articles as "Writing in Solidarity: The Lived Experience of African American Girls Writing Poetry," "Using Culturally and Inclusive Poetry Groups with Diverse Teens," and “Culturally Responsive Poetry.” She also co-authored the article, "Examining Teachers' Beliefs About African American Male Students in a Low-Performing High School in an African American School District." Recently, she completed writing her first children's book series.

Jennifer enjoys teaching and learning through lived experience and travel. She is returning to the United States after living in Costa Rica where she served as a holistic educational consultant, writer, mentor, and teacher. Jennifer is ecstatic to join Naropa and will be relocating to Colorado with her husband, daughter, and cat.
